Description
The Marquette Ore dock is a large structrue used for loading Ore by railway cars or Ore Jennies onto ships which then carry the ore to steelworks or to transshipment points. Most known ore docks were constructed near Iron mines on the Upper Great Lakes and served the Lower Great Lakes. Ore docks still in existence are typically constructed of steel, wood, reinforced concrete.
They are commonly used for loading bulk ore carriers with high mass, low vaule ore, such as Iron ore, in raw or Taconite form. Ore Docks were used in many Lake Superior ports of Minnesota,Wisconsin, and mainly Michigan. Rich Iron Ore deposits were first discovered in the upper peninsula in 1840 and remains a wealthy income for Michigan. By the 1890's Michigan was the largest supplier of iron ore in the United States. Railsroads hauled the iron ore from mines to the great docks on the Great lakes in places such as Escanaba & Marquette, where it would be loaded on ore freighters and transported to the rest of the country.
Iron Ore was discovered in Upper Michigan in Sept 19, 1844 by William A. Burt, The Iron Ore was a tremendous provided for the Union Army during the American Civil War.
Today the South Ore Dock has been abandoned in Lower Marquette Bay, but you can still drive along the coast line and see the Upper Ore Dock still in operation today and tourist come from all around the world to watch the trains cars loading into the super freighters.
