The APBA Challenge Cup / Detroit Gold Cup Hydroplane Racing Founded in 1904 is the oldest Active Trophy in Motor Sports and the Inaugural season was 1916 in Detroit Michigan and Sponsored by the Detroit yacht Club.
the Trophy Was first Awarded in 1904 as the APBA Challenge Cup, Hydroplane racing became a tradition in Detroit when Christopher Smith built a based boat that went 60 mph capturing the Gold Cup in 1915, The First major race to run on the Detroit River was in 1916 APBA Gold Cup, The Gold Cup in Power Boat Racing is Compared to the Super Bowl in Football
