Description
Calvary or Golgotha was a site immediately outside Jerusalem's walls where Jesus was Crucified, Since at least the early medieval period, it has been a destination for pilgrimage.
Easter is an important Christian festival - it's when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Bible says that Christ died on a cross on a day called Good Friday. According to the Bible, Jesus was then resurrected and came back to life on Easter Sunday.
Easter is the day that Christians believe that Christ rose from the dead, bringing eternal life to followers. Christ's resurrection, following his crucifixion on what is known as Good Friday, is a time of rejoicing and rebirth.
Easter Sunday marks Jesus's resurrection. After Jesus was crucified on the Friday his body was taken down from the cross and buried in a cave tomb. The tomb was guarded by Roman soldiers and an enormous stone was put over the entrance. On Sunday Mary Magdalene and some of Jesus's disciples visited the tomb.
Holy Week continues with Good Friday, the holiday in which Christians commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Services resume at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem which Christians believe to be the site of Jesus's crucifixion, burial, and resurrection.
